In ourHow to Quit Your Day Jobseries, we askfemale entrepreneursandsuccessful womenhow they started their own companies or landed their perfect profession. Here, 10 career superstars divulge how they developed their ability to advocate for themselves.1. Act like you own the placeJane West, CEO ofJane West, a cannabis company, says, Just go in there and act like you own the place. She shares, When I first started in the industry, I told myself, I am not a CEO. I honestly never thought of myself like that. But over time I watched all these other CEOs mana ge their businesses, and that inspired me. I realized if I was going to develop all of the products I wanted to bring into existence through my company, it would have to be my responsibility as CEO to work up the business relationships and figure out the designs and start selling the products. Now it seems obvious that my title should be CEO, but its all about finding yourconfidence.2. Play to winNatalia Butler, aBen Jerrysflavor guru, shares how she applied for her job at thepopular ice cream company. One day, I saw the job posting for Ben Jerrys. I originally had no intentions to move, as my career was growing, but I applied and said, Hey, this is my dream job. I said to myself, I might not get it, but if I dont play, I wont win. After a set of interviews, I got a call from the recruiter that, out of hundreds of applicants, I got it. I cried in the parking lot for about 30 minutes out of happiness. Taking the job at Ben Jerrys was the best decision I have ever made.3. Read insp iring storiesIn 2016,Lisa Huntwas one of the 100 makers, artists, and entrepreneurs featured inIn the Company of Women($35), a curated collection of inspiring women by Grace Bonney, the founder ofDesign*Sponge. When Hunt launched her first collection of prints in 2015, she submitted them to Design*Sponge for coverage and was featured in theWhats in Your Tool Boxcolumn on the website, which put her on Bonneys radar. Says Hunt of the book Its the book I wish I had when I was a young girl in need of confirmation that women that looked like me were out there in the world living fearless andcreative lives. That I can be a unique and imperfect individual and my creative voice will be valued and is needed in the world.4. Trust yourselfGrace Kraaijvanger, creator ofThe Hivery, a co-working space for women, says, Your life is a creative process. There is no finish line and no defined outcome. Youre the one who feels like shes standing on the edge of the cliff with nerves in your stomach and wings on your back. Youre the one who noticed that fear and exhilaration live in the same place in your belly. Its you who knows that you have to keep going. Its you who knows that you love getting advice, but ultimately you already know.5. Challenge the position quoBefore BFFsAmy Jain and Daniella YacobovskystartedBaubleBar, they had no background infashionor jewelry, but they didnt let that stop them. They were passionate about accessories and saw a void when their shopping needs werent met. Dont be afraid to challenge the status quo, as every great company starts out as a crazy idea Deciding we were going to do it ourselves and start BaubleBar meant getting over our fear of the unknown and going for it, says Yacobovsky.6. Dont worry about everyone liking youFrom the start,Cora Harrington, founder ofThe Lingerie Addict, was clear about what she wanted her blog to be, but not everyone else was on board. Initially, a lot of lingerie brands didnt want to talk with The Lingerie Addict because it didnt have the right look, so Cora focused on her readers instead. What a shame it would have been to stop in those early days because other people disliked my blog. Be nice, but dont worry too much about everyone liking you, says Harrington, who has grown her site into a six-figure blog and penned a book calledIn Intimate Detail($25).7. Listen to your tribeEven though activist Alexis Jones, founder ofProtectHer- a program that addresses domestic violence and sexual assault on college campuses - is hugely accomplished, she faces self-doubt like anyone else. Its hard as hell to have a vision and bring it to fruition, admits Jones. Without asupport systemand powerful tribe to remind you that youre capable of doing extraordinary things, its easy to listen to the lies that exist within yourself. To combat her fear and self-doubt, she relies on the knowledge that her friends and family will make sure she doesnt give up.8. Be unapologetically yourselfMolly Hayward, founder o fCora, a brand of feminine products, says she spent much of her 20s trying to be what others envisioned as a business professional. I wanted to fit in with the crowd that looked and sounded like the person I thought I should be, she reflects. It took a lot of time, introspection, and formative experiences for me to realize that I could build a successful company on my own terms, as my free-spirited and jagdbeute self, if I was willing to be brave enough to do things my way, own the things I cared about, and not apologize for any of it. In fact, when youre unapologetically yourself is when people actually start to respect you.9. Work for yourselfShauna Gartz, who started her own event planning companyShauna Loves Planning, is the mom to three boys and loves that she creates her own work schedule. I cant tell you how many times I thought about creating my own wedding and event planning company before I finally did it. I was pretty sure I could do it, but for years, doubt always found a way to creep in. The safety net of an employer was too alluring. Until one day, I decided that I dont want to look back on my life with regrets. I would much rather have tried and failed than never even tried. Not only am I doing what I love and working for myself, but I also get to control how much I work and when I work, says Gartz.10. Pursue what you loveOut of college,Candace Nelson, founder ofSprinkles, worked as a financial analyst at an investment bank and then in business development at an internet company. When the bottom dropped out of that world in 2000, I, along with so many, was out of a job. I decided to go back to school to pursue something I really loved, so I enrolled in pastry school and upon graduation, started a custom cake business out of my house, she says. At the time, cupcakes were still kids lunch box fare with shortening-laden frosting and garishly colored, waxy sprinkles. The cupcake was in desperate need of reinvention, and thats when I became obsessed with the idea of a cupcakes-only bakery, and Sprinkles was born.Thisarticlefirst appeared onBrit + Co.

4 things you need to know if you want to be successful in life

4 things you need to know if you want to be successful in life4 things you need to know if you want to be successful in lifeBoth parents and teachers extol the virtue of good grades if you want to be successful in business and life. The premise goes something like this good grades mean youre smarter and will be offered better career opportunities. If you want to be successful in life, however,it takes mora than intellect. It takes lots of self-awareness mixed in with a generous helping of spunk and grit.I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Management. Fashion sounded like an exciting career, so I interviewed with a large departement store chain. They hired me and soon promoted me to a buyer position. A dream job? Maybe, but bedrngnis for me. I would never be a success because I hated my job.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreI had misinterpreted the barometers of meaning and worth in my life. Here are 4 things you need to know if you want to be successful1. Choose good valuesI asked myself why I hated retail so much, and one day it hit me my job sucked because my success was measured by whether women bought polka dots or stripes. That was my contribution to society- the reason I got up every morning and drove to work. If this was to be the meaning of my life, just shoot me and get it over with.I had been lured by a very poor value- the illusion of glamour. There are other poor values out there, and they can entice and derail us at any point in our career.Poor values are superficial, selfish, and dependent on external events. They lie outside of our control which means we continually struggle to attain them. Material success, the need for adoration, and our desire to be popular are examples of how poor values can influence our behavior in negative ways. As a result, we set low standards for ourselves.Good values are honest, considerate of the greater good, and controllable. They are achieved internally and not dependent upon anyone else. When we choose good values, we choose good things to pursue. We encounter good problems and will work harder because the things we pursue provide value and meaning for us.How To Make It Work For You Its never too late to assess your values. Dont lower your standard and ask yourself, What gives me pleasure? Instead, ask yourself, How can I be a better person? The answer to this question will help you make priorities in your life.2. Start the important workI didnt care about the clothes that women chose to buy in our stores. It wasnt important work to me because it didnt improve my sense of self worth or generate happiness. When I later became an FBI agent, the important work landed on my desk the first day in the office. The FBI is charged with upholding federal law in the United States and I felt honored to be a part of a venerable organization. Internally, the FBI stands forFidelity,Bravery, a ndIntegrity- values that I held important.Important work starts when we pursue projects that hit our sweet spot. We make time for what matters to us. We decide what we want to be good at and make our priorities a reality. If you want to be successful, it will take more than tricks, hacks, or tips on how to get ahead. There are no shortcuts, despite the forums and webinars that promise instant success. As a result, were drowning in mediocrity and garbage advice. If you want to be successful, youll need the mental toughness to commit to what is important to you. You will need to put your shoulder into the work, even when you want to stop, because if your goal is important enough then quitting is never an option.Too often, we associate our brain with thinking only, but our brain is also where we experience emotions and process feelings. Research conducted byMihaly Csikzentmihalyihas shown that when we are truly engaged in what we are doing, and experience feelings of fulfillment, large p atches of our prefrontal cortex are deactivated. These regions of our brain silence our inner critic and leave us less inhibited and much more open to unique experiences. When we are engaged in work that has value and meaning, our brain releases dopamine which stimulates excitement, curiosity, and motivation. How To Make It Work For YouOur brain keeps growing until the age of twenty-five, by which time we develop a more mature sense of long-term planning and critical thinking. As a result, adults become afraid of the unknown. To get past that, relive the best part of your childhood. Go back and remember the fun things you liked to do as a child and young adult. They gave you autonomy, purpose, and a sense of fulfillment. This doesnt mean you have to quit your job, but it does require that you take a critical look atWhat you are doing, andWhich aspects of your job allow you to work on things that are important to youThe true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind himG.K. Chesterton3. Forge solid relationshipsWhile I met lots of great people during my three years in retail, I never forged solid relationships with any of them. The community spirit was weak. It never moved beyond the point of where the community was seen to exist for the sole benefit of the individual. Its selfish but is common in most communities, both in business and life.Conversely, a strong psychological thread developed during our four months of training at the FBI Academy. We were not allowed to leave the Academy for the first several weeks. As a result, we looked at one another as members of a special tribe. To this day, the concept of FBI family leise exists and employees will close ranks around one of their own if the individual is targeted or harmed in some way.As Sebastian Junger wrote in his book Tribe, We have a strong instinct to belong to small groups defined by clear purpose and understanding- tribes. This tribal connection ha s been largely lost in modern society, but regaining it may be the key to our psychological survival.Lydia Sohnasked 90-somethings what they had learned in life. She found out that they didnt crave a longer list of accomplishments, but more quality moments with their loved ones. This included family as well as friends. In a pair of studies involving nearly 280,000 people,William Chopik, assistant professor of psychology at Michigan State University, found that both family and friend relationships were linked to better health and happiness overall, but only friendships became a stronger predictor of health and happiness at advanced ages.Chopik stated that, over time, we keep the friends we like and make us feel good and discard the rest. Family relationships are often enjoyable too, but sometimes they involve negative interactions. How To Make It Work For You Find your tribe. Whether its your biological family or your adoptive one from work, school or church, find people who give you t he sense of security and connectivity.4. Make do with the hand youre dealtThe FBI Academy was hard for me. I received the bottom scores in about every defensive tactic exercise. Im not an athlete and never will be, but I had to find a way to get enough points to graduate from the Academy. I struggled, suffered, and endured physical and emotional pain. I was tempted to blame my instructors and accuse them of trying to oust me out of the Academy. After one particular dark night of the soul I came to grips with the fact that if I wanted to graduate from the Academy, Id need to take responsibility for my situation. I couldnt expect someone else to fight my battles.Mental toughnessis believing you will prevail in your circumstances rather than believing your circumstances will change. Once you accept this, you realize that no one gets a free pass in this thing called life. We all end up with scars. The current media has hobbled our culture by encouraging people to be outraged and offended by even the smallest incidents. Victimhood has become de rigeur and somehow represents the modern point of view. Everyone is a victim these days.Anyonewho is offended aboutanythingcan claim to be a victim. As long as wimps who call themselves victims are allowed a voice, self-righteousness will continue to be a menace. The biggest problem with wimps is that they take attention away from people whoreally arevictims of their circumstances. How To Make It Work For You Shit happens. Life is hard. Pain is inevitable. Growth is optional. Grow up and make do with the hand youre dealt. This article originally appeared on LaRae Quy.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

6 Tips to Integrate New Grads Into the Workforce

6 Tips to Integrate New Grads Into the Workforce 6 Tips to Integrate New Grads Into the Workforce We’ve recently been profiling Simply Hired’s real-world dive into just what it takes to successfully integrate new grads into the workforce.  It’s undisputed that developing quality talent from within not only saves on costs, it also fosters a more dynamic, interactive and teamwork focused workforce.  Adding in younger employees into companies also help foster much-needed changes, bringing in new ideas in everything from process to health and benefits.  All this means that newly minted graduates who are introduced into entry-level positions should be considered as part of a company’s most valuable resources. The corresponding problem, however, is that most graduates are woefully unprepared to start out in a 9-5 job, much less a professional career.  With this dichotomy, what then are employers to do in order to maximize the potential advantages while ensuring their new grads become productive team members? Enter SimplyHired’s detailed profiling of our team of new college grads who joined the ranks of corporate headquarters in Sunnyvale, California.  In this follow up video to the popular series we follow up with the recent grads to discover how they’ve adapted to work several months in. Interesting takeaways for employers should focus on the changing goals of the employees as they get a dose of real-world experience as well as their initial reactions to life on the job.  Check out the video for insights that could help influence your recent grad onboarding program. Tips for Landing a Side Gig

Tips for Landing a Side Gig Tips for Landing a Side Gig Perhaps you’re saving for a new car, a trip to Jamaica, or early retirement. Whatever your reason for wanting to earn more, landing a side gig can definitely help you achieve your goals. What’s a side gig? A side gig or side hustle- once known as moonlighting- is a job that allows you to earn extra cash while working flexible hours that accommodate your full-time job or daily responsibilities. When finding a side gig, it’s best to evaluate your skills and draw on those. Are you a skilled writer or photographer? You would have the most earning potential by drawing on those talents while working on the side. However, if you can’t identify your “talent,” don’t let that dissuade you because anyone who has transferable  professional skills, like typing or communication, can potentially land a side gig. Follow these tips for landing a side gig to boost your bottom line: Make a list of your skills. Consider your list and determine which skills are most marketable and useful to others. You don’t necessarily need a degree directly related to a  skill to make money from it. Are you good at data entry or typing, organizing, or communicating? Write those down! If you’re stumped when making your list, ask your friends and family members to identify what skills you have. Once you’ve compiled the list, consider each skill carefully to select the one you’ll want to spend time doing as your side gig. Wouldn’t it be great to find a high-paying side gig? Share the news. Tell your friends and family that you’re looking to earn extra cash with a side gig. Networking with others is an efficient way to find a gig for cash. Do you have a friend who owns a business? Maybe they need bookkeeping, cleaning, or customer service help- be sure to tell them you’re available! Even if they dont have any work for you, they might know someone who does. Update your email signature. Once you’ve determined the type of work you’ll do for your side gig, add a tagline at the bottom of your email signature to help spread the word. For example, adding “I’m a proofreader for hire” or “Need a photographer? Ask me about my reasonable rates!” will draw the reader’s attention. Become a member. At , there are literally thousands of flexible jobs posted to the site. The site features jobs with varying degrees of flexibility, including freelance, short-term, part-time, telecommuting, temporary, and more. No matter what line of work you’re interested in, landing a side gig is possible with  .

The Budget Is In. Heres Where the Feds Will Be Hiring.

The Budget Is In. Heres Where the Feds Will Be Hiring. The Budget Is In. Heres Where the Feds Will Be Hiring. The Budget Is In. Heres Where the Feds Will Be Hiring. By Kathryn Troutman President, The Resume Place, Inc. Federal Career Coach Director, Ten Steps to a Federal Job Certification Program February 20, 2018 Like so many presidents before him, Donald Trump has promised to streamline government, in part by trimming the federal workforce. But there are good reasons to believe that Uncle Sam will continue to create great jobs for hundreds of thousands of Americans each year: In his 2019 budget, the president calls for funding increases in Defense, Homeland Security, Veterans Affairs, and Commerce that will raise headcounts. For the remainder of the year after the 90-day hiring freeze last winter, the government hired at about the same rate as in 2016 and 2015 under President Barack Obama. More than one-quarter of federal workers nearly 550,000 of them are 55 or older, the Office of Personnel Management reported in September. Tens of thousands of these baby boomers will retire each year. New innovations for recruiting and re-skilling of future federal workforce The presidents budget even calls for a pool of $50 million to develop innovations in recruiting, retention and re-skilling for the future federal workforce. Where the federal jobs will be Now lets dig in and learn where the jobs will be in the fiscal year that begins this July 1. For Defense, the president is asking for a 14 percent increase over fiscal year 2017, to boost troop levels, add battleships and modernize equipment. For Homeland Security, the proposed hike is $3.6 billion, to continue hiring border agents, among other priorities. For Veterans Affairs, an $8.7 billion bump would help in the recruitment of medical personnel. For Commerce, a 6.1 percent increase would in part be allocated to hire staff and managers for the 2020 census. Cutting budgets for some agencies On the flip side, Trump wants to cut the budgets of these agencies and departments: State, EPA, Housing and Urban Development, Health and Human Services, Small Business Administration, Army Corps of Engineers, Labor, Agriculture and Transportation. But even as their headcounts are reduced, these entities likely will do some hiring; competition for these vacancies will be intense. Modernizing federal employment The president also would like to change the terms of federal employment to better align with the needs of a 21st century government. For one, he proposes to implement performance-based pay for employees in mission-critical operations. And where jobs are cut, current employees can shift from legacy positions into emerging fields in which the government faces shortages, including data analysis, cybersecurity and other IT disciplines, the budget states. In departments where there are critical personnel shortages, the administration would implement expedited hiring, as it is already doing at Veterans Affairs. But whether youre seeking a federal career, or youre a federal employee looking to move up to a higher grade level, you should expect to meet tough competition and be prepared to excel in the federal application process. Tips for clearing the hurdles to your federal job Unlike a private-sector resume, your federal resume must be very detailed, and probably three to five pages long. In the resume, your skills must be expressed using keywords that match the one year specialized experience described in the job posting on USAJOBS.gov. You must also include professional accomplishments that prove your specialized experience and KSAs â€" knowledge, skills and abilities. Does the federal application process sound daunting? With the right information, you can succeed with a thorough and systematic approach. Check out our book: Federal Resume Guidebook OR GET HELP WITH YOUR FEDERAL RESUME: GET A FEDERAL RESUME QUOTE Despite Trumps promise throughout the campaign and the opening weeks of his administration to drastically reduce the federal workforce, and a memorandum calling on all agencies to develop plans to immediately shed employees, the president has made less progress to that end than many of his recent predecessors. Presidents Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Clinton all cut more civil servants during their their first year in office than Trump did. Federal agencies in both President George W. Bush and Obamas first years in office beefed up their staffs, adding nearly 125,000 jobs in Obamas first year.

This is where you could vacation if you skipped a few brunches This is where you could vacation if you skipped a few brunches When an Australian millionaire claimed last year that the reason  why millennials couldn’t afford to buy a house  was that they were eating too much avocado toast, the internet collectively laughed. Because first of all,  avocado toast  is delicious, don’t @ us. And second, no one can afford to buy a house these days anyway. According to a study by online real estate site  Trulia, starter home prices have increased 58 percent since 2012, and in certain cities, you need to spend over 100 percent of your income to even afford one.So just saying avocadon’t on a morning of bottomless mimosas won’t really help you with a down payment, but it can buy you some vacation time, according to  HomeAway, an online marketplace for vacation rentals. Don’t believe us? Put down the toast and keep reading.Based on an Ipsos poll conducted on behalf of HomeAway, of 1,087 US adults aged 18-34, 93 percent of millennials would be willing to skip brunch to go on a trip with their BFFs. And almost half would rather take a 2-3 day trip instead of a week-long vacation. So HomeAway calculated the average price of a brunch (including cocktail, entrée, and coffee) in 15 cities across the country. Based on an average cost of $34, they then constructed a  Brunch Index  to see what popular destinations you could stay in if you just dialed down your breakfast budget. The results are surprisingly affordable. By skipping just two brunches, you could rent a 2-3 bedroom vacation home for a summer jaunt in a  ski town  like  Breckenridge, CO (average $70/person) or  Squaw Valley, CA (average $72/person). If you want to hit up  Austin, TX;  Nashville, TN; or  Palm Springs, CA, that requires skipping three brunches. We already know millennials are willing to  cut back on wedding budgets  to travel more, so passing up some pancakes for a weekend getaway seems like a relatively easy choice.“HomeAway vacation homes are half the cost for twice the space of a hotel room,” says Melanie Fish, H omeAway’s travel expert. Not to mention most of them come with hot tubs, pools, game rooms, and more - ideal for a memorable squad vacation. The steepest destination on the list is celeb hotspot the  Hamptons, which will cost you seven brunches (average $217/person). But after taking one look at this  listing in East Hampton, which sleeps seven and has a heated saltwater pool, we’ll happily take that trade and BYOBrunch, along with a  pool float. This article was originally posted on Brit + Co.

Writing from Third Person Limited Point of View

Writing from Third Person Limited Point of View Writing from Third Person Limited Point of View Before you write a single word of fiction, you will need to decide who is telling the story - and from which point of view. If the story is told by a narrator (rather than by a character), you will be writing from the third person perspective.  But who is the narrator? How much does the narrator know? Can the narrator get inside the characters heads to describe what theyre thinking?   What Is the Third Person Limited Point of View? The third person omniscient (meaning all knowing) point of view is a method of storytelling in which the narrator knows what every character is thinking.  Third person limited point of view, on the other hand, is a method of storytelling in which the narrator knows only the thoughts and feelings of a single character, while other characters are presented only externally. Third person limited grants a writer more freedom than first person, but less knowledge than third person omniscient. Why Choose the Third Person Limited Point of View? There are a number of reasons why you might decide that third person limited may be right for your next work of fiction. Here are just a few possibilities: You want the ability to show a situation through the eyes of an interesting or unique character. You are writing a mystery, and want the reader to experience the clues and outcomes from the point of view of one of your characters. You are telling a story in which your main characters perspectives evolve or change, and you want to show those changes through their eyes. You want to maintain a sense of uncertainty about other characters motivations, emotions, or past. Examples of Third Person Limited Point of View in Fiction Most works of fiction are told from the third person limited point of view. For example, Jane Austens famous Pride and Prejudice is told entirely  from the point of view of protagonist Elizabeth Bennett. J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter series unfolds its secrets through Harry himself who, like the reader, is new to the world of magic and wizardry. A classic example of third person limited fiction is Ernest Hemingways  For Whom the Bell Tolls, which sticks firmly with one characters consciousness, that of Robert Jordan, who shares: This Anselmo had been a good guide and he could travel wonderfully in the mountains. Robert Jordan could walk well enough himself and he knew from following him since before daylight that the old man could walk him to death. Robert Jordan trusted the man, Anselmo, so far, in everything except judgment. He had not yet had an opportunity to test his judgment, and, anyway, the judgment was his own responsibility. The reader will only know Anselmos thoughts and responses insofar as he reveals them through his actions. But Robert Jordans thoughts will be shared throughout the story. Its his reactions and his interpretations of events that the reader will understand and follow. Because third person limited is defined largely by what it doesnt do, it may help at this point to read an example of third-person omniscient for comparison.
