National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day

National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day Hooray for National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day! If I had to name one food that I love the most, it would be cheese so it’s no surprise that one of my favorite dishes is the grilled cheese sandwich. The grilled cheese sandwich dates back to the days of the Ancient Romans who were the first civilization to make a cooked bread and cheese sandwich.   However, the grilled cheese sandwich didn’t emerge in America until the 1920’s when inexpensive cheeses and affordable sliced bread became available. In the United States, the grilled cheese sandwich was first called the ‘toasted cheese’ or ‘melted cheese’ sandwich. The grilled cheese became a staple as it was a simple way to get some protein, fat, and carbohydrates all in one bite.     When Kraft Singles launched in 1949, the grilled cheese went from staple to dinner almost overnight. Each year, Americans consume over TWO BILLION grilled cheese sandwiches a year and, because it’s very popular, the entire month of April and April 12, 2014, is dedicated to the grilled cheese sandwich. Whether you are a kid at heart, an undergrad in college or the ultimate foodie, it’s easy to make a basic grilled cheese sandwich.   To make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich, start with the best melting cheese you can find such as an aged gouda, mozzarella, muenster, or cheddar and two slices of your favorite bread.     Take a nonstick pan over low heat and melt a slice of real butter.   Next, butter one of the two slices of bread and add a slice of your favorite cheese and close.   Place the sandwich in the bottom of the pan and cover it with a lid.   Cook over very low heat for about 10-15 minutes.   Check every few minutes to make sure the sandwich isn’t burning. Once the bottom slice of bread turns a pretty golden brown and the cheese is gooey and melting out the sides, flip the sandwich. Just like any food preparation, there should always be  proper food handling  all the time.
